More response from you on the ‘mosque controversy’….
Moose: Well said, Jeff. Here! Here!
Jeff: I would like to address the Islamic community center contiversy. The first thing I would like to point out is the Islam did not attack trhe world trade center, Al-Qeada did, their is a very important and distinct difference. In fact, no one seems to make mention that there were at least 75 Muslim VICTIMS of the 9-11 attacks, whose families had to not only deal with the loss of a loved one in a horrible tragedy, but also the contempt, hostility, and suspision that those same loved ones were somehow involved. Amy asked why do they need two Mosques? Well, why do they need 9 churches within the same distance? We want the rest of the world to believe that we are a beacon of freedom and tolerance that all else should aspire to be like yet over the past year there has been public outcry and protest over the building of mosques in New York (Staton Island), Wisconsin(Wilson), Tennessee(Murfreesboro), and California(Temecula). So Its not just people haveing a problem with it being so close to Ground Zero. The first amendment to our Constitution states “Congress shall pass no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiiting the free exercise thereof…” It is my impression that people are seeking the prohibition of the free exercise of the Islamic faith in Lower Manhattan. This entire situation is an oppertunity for us to prove that we are the nation of freedom and tolerance that we say we are. Instead it looks like we will take this chance to show the rest of the world that we are instead fearful, distrusful, and bigoted. Remember that Muslim Americans, are still Americans, and should be given the same unquestioned rights as everyone else.
From: Superchuck
As a member of a democratic society, built on the belief of freedom of religion and the separation of church and state, if we deny the constitutional rights of one group of people, based on religion, sex, skin color, or any other possible trait, when will those rights be taken away from those trying to impose their beliefs on others, be it due to an act of war or not. Should we remove or destroy every church where an atrocity by the christian faith has occurred? Should we punish the flock for the decisions and actions of the few fanatics? Also, you brought up the fact that there are 2 other mosques in the area. There are as many sects within the Islamic and Muslim faith as there are the christian faith. I know of small towns where the churches outnumber then number of towns people.
Another point to add to my previous Holler! Over 3000 people died in the twin towers. And all types of people died, people of every ethnic background and religious belief. I bet even some non-productive types of people died within the disaster (pedophiles, rapist, murders, and of the sort). Also, when do you say too soon is not too soon anymore.
| This is a conversation I (Moose) had with a listener over email this morning regarding the ‘Mosque Controversy’. Start at the bottom and work your way up. Also, you might wanna read this article too. Very interesting. Hugs, Moose From: Jenn Ya know, you have a really good point! We should not show the fear that those assholes want us to feel. We do need to get up, dust off and show them that they can’t bring us down. If more people looked at it like that, there would be no issue. I think the emotional ties are piloting the anti-community center bunch, as it is me. Thanks for giving me that insight. I pride myself on being a strong, can’t hold me down type of girl, but after the devastation that happened that day, I have definitely lead with my emotions rather than my head on anything having to do with the terrorists. You are a good man, Moose! From: “Moose” <Moose@desmoinesradiogroup.com> Hey Jenn,
Thanks for the well-thought out and measured response. I can appreciate your connection to the tragedy of 9/11 and value your opinion.
My feeling is that I understand it must be tough for relatives/family/friends of 9/11 victims to go to that area but I’m a staunch believer in pulling yourself back up, shaking off the dust and getting back in the game. Not just literally, but figuratively as a democracy and the greatest country on the planet. I believe we are a tolerant society who won’t be held hostage by either terrorists or pundits who WANT us to be scared. The vast majority of muslims (as I’m sure you know first-hand) are peaceful people who have been unfairly classified as terrorists and enemies of the state jUST because 19 assholes used their religion as a toilet to shit on and do with it what they would like. We’ve GOT to be better than that, we HAVE to maintain our identity as a tolerant and diverse nation and when we scream that we don’t want an Islamic Community Center (yes, it DOES have a prayer room!) 2 blocks from ground zero, we’re telling terrorists that we are scared and we’re telling the assholes who reinforce the stereotypes (ie: falafel vendor is a bomb-making jihadist) to KEEP spewing lies and distorted facts.
Look, do I take a second look when I see an arabic person getting on the same flight as me? Yes, I think that’s only natural at this point in history, but do I try to rise above it and be a better person? Damn right I do!
Bottom line is that everyone with New York City’s zoning and local government is cool with it going in (it’s not even a mosque!) so why can’t everyone else? I’m sure they have their own relatives or friends stories that involve 9/11 yet they still think it’s okay. So why can’t the rest of the country?
Thanks for listening,
Moose
